COMMEMORATING THE INTERNATIONAL PEACE DAY.

On 16th Sept,KALI joined the rest of the world in the peace Week activities by through a district Dialogue/interface meeting. The District Dialogue Meeting was conducted at Cape Hotel in Kamwenge.
39 Participants (F=11, M=28) attended. This activity was attended by, District leaders both Technical & Political, RDC,DPC,DISO, Religious leaders of Anglican, Catholic and Islam, Judiciary/state attorney, C/Person LC.III of the five sub counties, 10 representative of the youth and women groups, PWD Focal person, HIV/AIDS umbrella leader, warden Community conservation Kibale N.P and Other CSOs.

The dialogue aimed at;
1.    Facilitating a district multi-stakeholders meeting, share conflict triggers and human rights Violations and come up with action issues on promoting Peace Education for Peaceful Co-existence in Kamwenge district.
2.    Enabling Foot peace ambassadors from ten groups interface with district leaders on issues triggering conflicts & HR Violations that has resulted to murders in different sub counties.
3.    Understanding the legal implication of inherited land/properties presented by the State Attorney.

ISSUES RAISED.
-High cases of alcoholism leading to Domestic violence & High school dropout in Busiriba sub county.
-Land conflict. Boundary issue & Clan fight over inherited properties.
-Cultivators and the Cattle keepers’ conflict.
-Problem animals from Kibale National park communities - Busiriba,Kahunge & Ntara
-Sub counties are not well facilitated to follow up cases, yet some parties are vulnerable to afford the simplest means of transport in the most hard to reach communities.
-Scrupulous Money Lenders taking peoples properties causing high death levels
-Inadequate community awareness on the basics of the law governing land and other human rights issues
-The un streamlined LC.1 system in the villages has led to inconsistence in case mgt.

ACTION ISSUES:
.On the Issue of land Conflict, Participants agreed that there is need to access the succession Act & share it with key stakeholders and Sensitize the public in Kamwenge.  KALI will through the state attorney take lead in this.
.Coordination with warden Community Conservation Kibale N.P to understand their community engagement schedule so as to Network & mobilize against the increasing school dropout among frontline communities due to problem animals. KALI and LC.III C/Person.
.It was also realized that most land conflicts result from scrupulous money lenders. DISO & RDC are following up this issue. Additionally, KALI will share with District Commercial Officer to continue with the process of legalizing their business.

.The issue of alcoholism was also taken as a triggering force to conflicts in communities. DISO shared that this will equally be given attention in the security meetings. LC.II C/Person will continue sensitizing people against this.
.All participants agree to play their part towards realizing the action issues made.
 
 
The District C/Person LC.V in his brief courtesy call to the participants assured that the issues agreed on during the two day deliberation will be given support when his office is reached for the same.

CITIZENS PETITON S/C LEADERS ON LAND & WITCH CONFLICTS

KALI Conducted IN NYABANI S/C. The neighborhood assembly was conducted on 13/9/2016. It was Changed from Busiriba S/C to Nyabani due to the pressing demand from the sub county leadership of Nyabani and the community.Total of 75 community members (F=35, M=40) attended

ISSUES RAISED

-The main reasons for the demand of an NA in Nyabani was the increasing level of Land Conflict and witch crafts in the Community. 35 community members had petitioned the office of the C/man LC.III and the OC S/C Police. Of their intention to evict
-Land conflict associated with clan & Family fight & Inherited properties.
-Money lenders
-Lack of access to clean and safe water was Community concern 
-High school dropout
-Alcoholism was one of the key issues causing hooliganism in the Community.

Feedback by leaders.
-OC Police thanked citizens for not taking the law in their hands.
-Citizens were Cautioned that No citizen has the right to evict a person unless under the laws of Uganda
-C/Person LC.I was cautioned on signing sell of land agreements to more than one person at ago increasing Land conflict.
-High school dropout was associated to parents who were not serous with their families adding that there was free education up to university level.
-Emphasis on engaging into development work like Operation wealth Creation projects was made by the sub county chief.

THE TRAINED PEACE AMBASSARDORS PREACH PEACE

Upon Training of Peace ambassorders, KALI    
Facilitated Trained 10 FPAs to train 30 CBO members each.
310 Participants (M=140      F=170) from the 10 groups. From 18th -23 Aug.2016.
 Training Venues were their respective local Churches and schools.The group trained included 5 for youth and 5 for women in the five sub counties of project area.

The trainings were on the concept of peace, conflict analysis, management and prevention and Peace Education. Basically, helping members to understand the conflicts in their communities and how they can prevent these conflicts as peace Ambassadors.
Conflict TREE & Onion were used for conflict analysis during the training.
The trainings started in the morning hours and ended evening. Members named themselves with peace names so as to significantly show they are peace promoters in the community e.g. the name Uwamahoro in Rufumbira language meaning PEACE. The facilitators were given support by KALI project team

GROUP PRESENTATIONS
The Participants were divided into groups, Causes of conflict in the community conflict tree and Conflict analysis/mapping using the Onion.

-Corruption in the LC.I courts
-Family/Clan land conflicts
-Problem animals in Kahunge,Busiriba &Ntara S/C
-Multiple women & Lack of respect in the married
-Men steal food produced by women.
-Sexual Violence
-Poverty
-Theft of food produce by some refugee individual in Nkoma S/C
-Witch Crafts in communities
-Corruption.

Effect.
Death of both men and women, Divorce, School dropout, Child suffering and homeless.

CROSS CATTING ACTION ISSUES MADE
-Each member agreed to spread the peace massages to his or her friend whenever they meet at different places
-Organize/compose songs, Music Drama and dance with a massage of Peaceful Co-existence.
-The members trained to be the example in the community as the peace ambassadors  in the society
-Sensitization through churches during Sunday prayers within the community
-Organize community sensitization meetings on conflict prevention, Peaceful Co-existence massages and other human rights violations in the community
-The Peace Ambassadors coordinate with chairperson local council one to ensure proper peace education
-Organize football matches with other community groups with massage of Peaceful co-existence


 C/Persons LC.I of the areas where CBO seat attended these trainings and they appreciated KALI approach of sensitizing communities on conflict

Blog story 2.


Conducted sensitization meetings on Peace Building.

The meetings were organized in the CBO communities /Villages by FPA where 200 participants (20 in each CBO) attended in total. This was from 1st-5th Aug.


 ISSUES
-The issue of Refugees in Nkoma S/C Migrants of new people, In the five sub counties of project work, there are a mix of tribes. Others from within Uganda while others are from Burundi, Rwanda and DRC. The massage of peaceful co-existence is the center of community sensitization.
-During sensitization meetings, the aspect of respect for the rule of law is given emphasis so that mob justice and Murder rates are reduced.
-Participants are being encouraged to embrace government programs like UPE, USE to avoid children becoming future problems to their parents as its happening today.
 There are high levels of witch crafts in the communities of Nyabani, Ntara & Kahunge. This has also been leading to community mob justice.

This activity intended to facilitate communities of CBOS with knowledge on peace building conflict management and Human Rights by the FPAs. For peaceful co-existence in communities of project area in the sub counties of; Nkoma, Nyabani, Busiriba, Kahunge and Ntara of Kamwenge District.

To sensitize targeted women & youth group’s FPAs in peace building, conflict management and human rights promotion in the targeted communities.

Action
-Participants of women & youth groups reached agree to reach out the massage of peace building and co-existence in communities.
- The 20 FPAs reached in each of the 10 groups visited agreed to take the massage of peaceful co-existence in local Churches, public gatherings among others.
